Staying Safe Outside this Summer!

July is Ultraviolet Safety Month and during this time, let’s remember how important it is to protect our eyes and skin from the side effects of UV rays.

Be Safe in the Sun

Too much ultraviolet radiation (UV) from sunlight is dangerous. Nearly half of UV radiation is received between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are the strongest.

Too much sun exposure can be harmful. It can lead to:

  • Vision problems and damage to your eyes
  • Suppression of the immune system
  • Premature aging of the skin
  • Skin cancer

Ways to protect your skin and eyes from the effects of UV radiation
Any time you head outdoors, make sure you have these four things:

  1. Long-sleeved shirt or sun-protective clothing. This also applies to babies and kids who are more sensitive
  2. Broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or greater, and re-apply every two hours or 30 minutes before going outside
  3. A hat, the wider the brim the better, or an umbrella
  4. UV-protective sunglasses to protect the eyes

If possible, seek shade or shelter during peak sun exposure times, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Let’s stay safe, aware, and informed while outdoors this summer!
